SGL Botanica

A living digital botanical experience where movement brings digital nature to life.

SGL Botanica is an interactive Self Graphic Lab experimental work that transforms user movement into organic digital life. Using local finger-tracking, it creates a tactile and elegant art installation in the browser where users influence the growth and blooming of a generative botanical form.

Digital nature responding to the human touch

The experience uses a dual-hand control system. The left hand manages the blooming state of the flowers, while the right hand influences the overall growth and complexity of the plant structure. It uses MediaPipe Hands for real-time landmark detection locally on the device, ensuring privacy by design.

The actual stack

Built with HTML5 Canvas API for high-performance rendering, MediaPipe for on-device ML tracking, and vanilla JavaScript for a minimal footprint. The experience is designed for both desktop camera tracking and mobile touch interaction.
